Spotify has named Afropop singer, Yemi Alade as its EQUAL Africa artist for September.
Phiona Okumu, Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, announced this in a statement on Friday in Lagos.
According to the head of music, Spotify’s EQUAL Africa program aims to empower female voices in Africa by highlighting artists who push the boundaries of their art.
“Yemi Alade exemplifies the type of talent that the programme seeks to support.
“Yemi Alade is one of the most well-known and influential female musicians in Nigeria,” Okumu said, adding that this has given the Afropop sensation a devoted following both domestically and abroad.
She also mentioned that the artist’s amazing performances and powerful voice have earned her recognition globally, enabling her to represent African music on international platforms.
“Spotify is proud to be associated with Yemi Alade and will continue to use the EQUAL Africa program to support women in music, amplify their voices, and help to showcase their incredible talents to the global audience.
“Alade has worked with international superstars like Beyoncé, Angélique Kidjo, and Awilo Longomba. Her unquestionable talent and powerful voice have captivated audiences across continents.
“She has also taken her rich, beautiful African music on the road, enthralling audiences on all continents and in all cultures.”
Meanwhile, Alade has described her style of music as “the ideal fusion of R&B, afrobeat, and high-life pop.
“It’s a lovely combination that occasionally draws inspiration from blues or jazz. You can distinguish the tones if you pay great attention.
“My music is a fusion of African sounds, and African rhythm is at its core, but I don’t like to be in a box”.
