South Korean lawmakers have impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol over his failed martial law bid, Edum News reports.
The President was on Saturday impeached with the opposition declaring a “victory of the people.”
Yoon was impeached following a vote which took place as hundreds of thousands took to the streets of Seoul in rival rallies in support and against him.
From the votes, 204 out of 300 lawmakers voted for Yoon’s impeachment while 85 voted against it. Three abstained, with eight votes nullified.
With this impeachment, the South Korean President has been suspended from office while South Korea’s Constitutional Court deliberates on the vote.
Prime Minister Han Duck-soo is now the nation’s interim leader as court now has 180 days to rule on Yoon’s future.
