Senate Declares Edo Gov Okpebholo’s Seat Vacant

The Senate has declared the seat of Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, vacant, Edum News reports.

While making the declaration on Wednesday, the red chamber urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct a bye-election to fill the vacancy.

The announcement was following a letter submitted by Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), representing Benue South.

In his letter, Senator Moro cited the constitutional requirement to declare the seat vacant and urged the Senate President to notify INEC to conduct a fresh election for the district.

The letter partly reads, “This vacancy has become necessary following Senator Monday Okpebholo’s inauguration as governor. In compliance with the Constitution, his seat is now deemed vacant. I respectfully request that the Senate President make the declaration and notify INEC accordingly.”

Recall that the seat of Okpebholo, who represented Edo Central Senatorial District, became vacant following his election and inauguration as governor in November.
