The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) says it has launched an investigation into the petrol tanker explosion in Jigawa State, which claimed over 140 lives and left many severely injured.
This was disclosed on thursday through a statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Mrs Bimbo Oladeji.
The bureau, in its statement, stated that the petrol tanker, en route from Kano to Nguru in Yobe State, lost control and crashed, spilling its contents.
The incident led to the loss of lives as a result of residents attempting to scoop the fuel, “the tanker exploded, resulting in a massive fire” that pushed many into their early grace.
Shu’aibu Hambali, the Chairman of Taura LGA, confirmed the latest causality figure on Wednesday evening while speaking live on a local radio station, Arewa Radio.
Meanwhile, mass burials have been held for the 147 victims who died while scooping fuel from the tanker wreckage.
Other victims were rushed to the Federal Medical Centre in Birnin Kudu when there was no more bed space at the hospital.
“In line with our mandate to investigate accidents across all transportation sectors, the NSIB has deployed a go-team of experts to investigate the accident.

“The team will assess the circumstances surrounding the crash and the explosion to identify causal factors and provide safety recommendations aimed at preventing future occurrences.
The bureau also promised that further updates on the investigation will be communicated as the investigation team gathers and analyses evidence from the scene of the mishap.
