Nigerians Fume Over Law That Anyone Who Attempts Suicide Be Charged To Court
Suicide which is the act of intentionally causing one’s own death is gradually becoming the order of the day in recent times.
This is as the news is always filled stories of people who ended it all for one reason or the other.
Depression is said to be the leading cause of suicide as many people who kill themselves are discovered to be depressed in the long run.
Recently, the case of a man who attempted suicide over the current economic hardship and fuel scarcity bedevilling the nation went viral.
The man who was identified as Shuaibu Yushua had threatened that if the Federal government fails to address the plights Nigerians are facing he would jump down from a transmission tower belonging to a radio station in Abuja which he had climbed.
The man was however rescued after first responders who spoke to him encouraged him to climb down with the promise that his grievances would be communicated to President Bola Tinubu and solutions would be given.
The Federal government however failed to keep it’s own side of the bargain as Shuaibu was apprehended by men of the Nigerian police force immediately he came down.
Giving reasons for his arrest, the police had revealed that by attempting suicide, Shuaibu committed a crime which contravene sections 231,111 and 114 of the Penal Code Act.
The FCT Police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh who said this in a statement released on her official X account also noted that Shuaibu have been sent to the Social Development Secretariat for mental evaluation, adding that if he is found mentally stable after the test, he will be charged to court for attempted suicide, disturbance of public peace and incitement.
This development then sparked various reactions from Nigerians who are insisting that charging someone who tried to kill himself to court is not the best approach.
