Nigeria’s Falconets have been eliminated from the ongoing FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia following a defeat to Japan.
The Danjuma-led squad lost against Japan by two goals to one, with Olushola Sobowale scoring a consolation goal late in the game after a well-placed Goodness Osigwe cross into the box.
Miyu Matsunaga converted a feed from Rihona Ujihara in the 33rd minute to give the Japanese the lead in a goalless first half.
Nigeria’s performance did not improve in the second half, as they allowed their opponents to control the tempo and dictate moves.
It wasn’t long before Japan scored again, this time through Maya Hijjikati, in the 63rd minute.
However, by the time Nigeria attempted to add a second goal to force extra time, Japan had already won.
It’s another terrible finish to a season for the Falconets, who haven’t advanced past this round since losing in the championships to Germany in 2014.
