President Bola Tinubu has sworn in Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun as Nigeria’s 23rd substantive Chief Justice, following her confirmation by the Senate on September 25, 2024.

On Monday, Kekere-Ekun took her oath of office and signed the oath register in the Council Chamber of the State House in Abuja.

She replaces Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, who took office on June 27, 2022, and retired on August 22, 2024, at the age of 70.

Three of Kekere-Ekun’s predecessors attended Monday’s ceremony, including the first female Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Aloma Mukhtar, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, Justice Walter Onnoghen, and her predecessor, Justice Ariwoola.

Members of her family and other Supreme Court justices were also present in the Chambers. Kekere-Ekun will take the oath of office for the second time in five weeks.

On August 23, Tinubu swore her in as interim president prior to the Senate’s approval.
