U.S Vice President, Kamala Harris plans to visit the US-Mexico border while in Arizona on Friday, aiming to bridge the gap with former President Donald Trump on immigration.
Harris has previously visited the border as a US senator and state attorney general representing a border state, California.
According to one of the individuals, some Harris campaign staffers are still concerned about the polling gap, which shows Trump leading on the topic, but they also see an opportunity to close a gap they believe is closing and shut down GOP attacks on her for not visiting the border enough.
Friday’s visit to Arizona comes at a time when border crossings are at their lowest since 2020, and it follows new polls that shows Trump leading in the battleground state. Republicans have incorrectly claimed that Harris is the “border czar,” implying that she is entirely responsible for managing the US-Mexico border.
Harris’ club has been fighting to shake off the championship since the moment President Joe Biden assigned her to tackle the root causes of migration in 2021.
Harris campaign officials argue that she has a strong case on immigration, citing a failed bipartisan border measure and her experience as California attorney general dealing with transnational criminal gangs. She recently criticized Trump’s immigration proposals, drawing a stark contrast with her Republican opponent.
“While we fight to move our nation forward to a brighter future, Donald Trump and his extremist allies will keep trying to pull us backward. We all remember what they did to tear families apart, and now they have pledged to carry out the largest deportation, a mass deportation in American history,” she said.
“Imagine what that would look like and what that would be. How’s that going to happen? Massive raids, massive detention camps. What are they talking about?” she added.
