The Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency has issued a stern warning to seven Local Government Area communities at risk of flooding, particularly those residing along waterways, to promptly relocate to safer, higher ground in preparation of the peak of the rainy season.
This precautionary measure was given by the Executive Secretary of the Agency, Dr Usman Mazadu on Monday, in a statement in Kaduna.
According to him, it was necessary to bring the notice to the communities due to the torrential rainfall experienced between Sunday and Monday, which is still ongoing without abating.
He further explained that the torrential rainfall might result in the overflow of rivers, particularly those LGAs that have rivers or tributaries crossing through them.
Dr. Mazadu stressed the importance of informing affected populations about the tremendous and continuous torrential downpour that has occurred over the previous 48 hours and shows no indications of abating.
He warned that the sustained high rains could cause rivers to overflow, endangering populations near waterways, particularly those with rivers or tributaries flowing through them.
The Executive Secretary advised residents of these high-risk locations to be extremely vigilant and take urgent steps to safeguard themselves and their property.
By shifting to higher elevation, communities can reduce the risk of damage and inconvenience caused by flooding.
The Agency’s warning serves as a timely reminder of the significance of being prepared and acting quickly in the face of oncoming natural calamities.
“It is important that communities within these tributaries are most likely to experience flooding; they should be intimated to be vigilant while preparing for alternatives to evacuate themselves to higher and safer grounds.
