A plane carrying 62 people crashed in Brazil’s Sao Paulo state on Friday, according to firefighters and airline Voepass.

While no official death toll has been provided, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva stated during an official event in Itajai, Santa Catarina, that there appeared to be no survivors.

The plane was flying from Cascavel in southern Parana state to São Paulo’s
Guarulhos International Airport.

“There is still no confirmation of how the accident occurred or the current situation of the people on board,” he said

Images shown by local media showed a huge airliner nosediving at great speed, while others showed a large column of smoke rising from the crash scene in what appeared to be a residential area.

The Fire Department of Sao Paulo posted on social network X: “Aircraft crash, 7 teams involved, so far only this information.”

The city of Vinhedo, with about 76,000 residents, is located approximately 80 kilometers (50 miles) northwest of Sao Paulo.
