Álvaro Morata, a Spanish forward, has revealed that his recent move to AC Milan led to the collapse of his marriage with his estranged wife, Alice Campello.
The 31-year-old joined Milan for €13 million a month ago, just days after Spain won Euro 2024, and signed a four-year contract at the San Siro.
The pair, who married in Venice in 2017, announced their split on August 12 in an Instagram post.
Morata, who has previously played for Chelsea, Real Madrid, Juventus, and Atlético Madrid, indicated that his estranged wife preferred to remain in Spain and was unwilling to relocate.
He also addressed rumors of infidelity, maintaining that he was faithful during their seven-year relationship.
He told De Corazón: “I am devastated, but I swear I never cheated on her. She’s the most important woman in my life. I am tired of people saying I was unfaithful to Alice. I didn’t even attend the national team party to avoid such rumors. Since then, I have avoided speaking publicly out of respect for her and to prevent further speculation.
“Alice wanted to remain in Spain and wasn’t willing to move again. Despite our differing views, we maintain a strong relationship for the sake of our four children. There are no regrets.” Morata added
In an interview with the Spanish publication Marca, Campello, Morata’s estranged wife attributed their breakup to instability brought on by repeated relocation and postpartum depression after the birth of their fourth child. She also dismissed claims of infidelity on Morata’s part.
“We are two young people, we have both been immature when it comes to managing certain situations, there are many children, moments of instability of being from one country to the other. My post-partum depression has had an influence and his, too, which has not allowed us to manage certain situations between us.
“We love each other infinitely, love does not end from one day to the next, we respect each other a lot and nothing will change. It is what we both needed now, however, I know that Alvaro would kill for me,” she added.
