On Tuesday morning, protesters gathered at the Ikeja Underbridge in Lagos State to observe the country’s 2024 Independence Day.
The protest, however, is being closely observed by a large number of security personnel, including police officers, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps officials, and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps members.
Olanrewaju Ishola, the state Commissioner of Police, leads the police squad on the demonstration grounds.
The Protesters are seen screaming solidarity songs and holding placards with messages like “Reverse electricity tariff now,” “End all attacks on democratic rights,” “Reduce petrol price to N197 per litre; end scarcity,” and “Profit soars while people suffer.”
While Some civil society organizations are also involved in the protest, including the Take It Back Movement, the Education Rights Campaign, the Coalition for Revolution, and the Socialist Workers League.
This is the second time in two months that disgruntled Nigerians have taken to the streets to protest the country’s hardships.
The organisers of the #FearlessOctober1 event said it was a continuation of the #Endbadgovernance protest, which ran from August 1st to 10th.
