Newcastle Boss. Eddie Howe insists he wants to keep Kieran Trippier despite plans that the England defender wants to leave St James’ Park.

Trippier was surprised to be left out of Newcastle’s Premier League opener against Southampton last Saturday.

Tino Livramento replaced him at right back, and Bruno Guimaraes, a Brazilian midfielder, took over as Newcastle captain.

According to reports, Trippier, who will turn 34 next month, wants to leave Tyneside before the transfer market closes on August 30.

However, Howe is eager to hold onto a player who was an essential player in England’s journey to the Euro 2024 championship.

Howe told reporters on Friday: “I hope so. I can never answer these questions with absolute certainty because it’s football and the transfer window is always unpredictable. But my wish is that he stays here and continues to play for us.

“He’s played a huge role in changing the narrative around the team. When he first came in, we were in a very difficult position and it’s easy to forget that.

“He took a big risk to leave a huge football club and was having a successful period with them to come to a team battling relegation.”

Trippier joined the Magpies from Atletico Madrid in January 2022, becoming one of the club’s first major acquisitions under Saudi Arabian ownership.

He was instrumental in Newcastle’s revival, which saw the club reach the 2023 League Cup final and compete in the Champions League last season.
