Abuja Federal High Court has barred the Directorate of Road Traffic Services and Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) from impounding, confiscating, or imposing fines on motorists, EdumNews Reports.

The judgement was delivered by Justice Nkeonye Maha.

The judgement came after a suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1695/2023, was filed by a public interest lawyer, Mr. Abubakar Marshal.

Justice Maha, restrained VIO from impounding, confiscating, or imposing fines on motorists as it would be wrongful, oppressive, and unlawful.

He ordered a permanent injunction prohibiting the respondents from unjustly infringing Nigerians’ rights to property ownership, freedom of travel, and the presumption of innocence.

He added that only a court of competent jurisdiction could impose a fine or sanction if any motorist is found to have breached any existing law.
