The Advocacy for Disability Act (ADAC), has reacted to the recent public hearing on the proposed law to establish the Gombe State Disability Protection Law and Disability Commission, among other things, is a significant step forward in the state’s march towards inclusivity.
The group made up of five Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), the Joint Association of Persons with Disability (JONPWD) Gombe State Chapter, the Gombe State Network of Civil Society (GONET), and the Association of Non-Governmental Organizations (ANGO), stated that the public hearing on the proposed bill will further harness public input in order to produce people-oriented legislation.
The Inclusive Friends Association (IFA), Abuja; Global Youth Empowerment and Vulnerable Initiative, Adamawa State; Lawanti Development Community Foundation, Gombe State; Center for Peace Education and Community Development, Taraba State; and El-New Hope Foundation, Abia State, are the five civil society organizations.
Grace Jerry, ADAC Cluster Anchor and Executive Director of the Inclusive Friends Association (IFA), disclosed this in a statement, that they are excitedly awaiting the creation of an inclusive state as Governor Mohammed Inuwa Yahaya, by signing the measure as soon as the Assembly has completed the legislative process, rewrites the history of people with disabilities in the state.
“The ADAC celebrates the efforts of His Excellency towards the disability community even in the absence of a Disability Law and holds strong on his statement.
“We remain resolute in our commitment to providing necessary support for the empowerment and dreams of our PWDs”, it said.
The group also urged the State Assembly to keep up its people-centered legislative leadership in order to pass inclusive legislation that will enable the state’s disability population reach its full potential.
