Italy Legend, Fabio Cannavaro believes Lautaro Martinez is the only Serie A player who might play for Manchester City or Real Madrid, and warns Dani Carvajal that a defender must perform ‘amazing things’ to win the Ballon d’Or.
In an interview with La Gazzetta dello Sport, Cannavaro, the most recent Ballon d’Or winner in Italy (2006), lauded Lautaro Martinez, a standout player for Inter. El Toro is one of five players from Serie A that make up the top 30 Ballon d’Or list.
“Lautaro cannot be questioned. The former defender remarked, He always makes a difference. He won the title and Copa America.
“I hope he never leaves Inter and Serie A. Perhaps no one else comes to mind when I think of Serie A players who could play for Real Madrid or Man City save Lautaro. Ademola Lookman, the hero of Atalanta’s Europa League, is also a contender for the Ballon d’Or, and Cannavaro was not taken aback to see his name listed among the league’s top players.
“Not following those three Final goals. His season was amazing.
“Vinicius or Bellingham, who, however, was not on the same level as the first part of the season. Kylian Mbappé is a champion even though his season wasn’t the best. He seems like a logical choice.
“Then there are Carvajal and Rodri. Everything was won by him [Carvajal]. However, a defender needs to go above and beyond to win the Ballon d’Or”. He said
Cannavaro accomplished this in 2006, months before he lifted the Golden Ball, as he guided Italy to victory in the World Cup.
