Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), has highlighted corruption as a significant obstacle to Nigeria’s development.

He emphasized that corruption erodes trust in public institutions, undermines the rule of law, and stifles economic growth.

In a keynote address at the International Law Conference, Aliyu stated that an estimated 87 million bribes, amounting to N700 billion, were paid, with the frequency of bribes higher in rural areas than in urban areas.

He noted that corruption is not only a legal issue but also a social problem that requires a comprehensive and sustained approach.

In 2023, corruption ranked fourth among the most critical problems affecting the country, after cost of living, insecurity, and unemployment.

Despite these challenges, Aliyu expressed delight that Nigeria was making progress, with the rate of citizens reporting bribe payments to official authorities increasing from 3.6% in 2019 to 8.6% in 2023.

He also highlighted the prevalence of sexual harassment in Nigerian tertiary institutions, with approximately 70% of female graduates reporting experiencing such harassment.

Aliyu emphasized the importance of human rights and social justice in a fair society, stating that the ICPC is committed to upholding these rights and promoting social justice. He also highlighted the need for continuous education and training for the judiciary to effectively adjudicate cyber-related cases.
