The 32-year-old German international goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen of Barcelona will undergo surgery on Monday to repair a ruptured knee tendon.
The Catalan club stated that the captain of the team may miss the remainder of the season due to the injury.
“(Ter Stegen) has a complete rupture in the patella tendon in his right knee,” said Barcelona in a statement
“On Monday afternoon he will undergo a surgical process and once complete a new update will be released.”
Ter Stegen, who was chastised for making a mistake in Barcelona’s 2-1 Champions League loss to Monaco on Thursday, suffered the injury before halftime at Villarreal’s Estadio de la Ceramica.
After the game, Barcelona coach Hansi Flick stated that the player’s injury was visible when he lay down on the field.
Inaki Pena replaced Ter Stegen and is expected to stand in for the German, though Barcelona may seek a replacement. Flick stated that it was too early to comment on the matter.
“I don’t know if I like this question directly after the match… I just want to see how Marc is, he’s our captain and is a very important player for us.
“Please understand that I don’t want to talk about that.”
