The Australian Government on Thursday announced that it would ban children under 16 years from using social media, Edum News reports.
The decision according to the country’s Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese is because such children get to badly influenced by platforms like Facebook and TikTok.
Albanese further noted that social media was “doing real harm to our kids. This one is for the mums and dads. Social media is doing real harm to kids and I’m calling time on it.”
The Prime Minister also lamented that social media which was once celebrated as a means of staying connected and informed, have been tarnished by cyberbullying, and the spread of illegal content.
Albanese further called on social media platforms to listen to the decision of the government by stopping children under the age of 16 from having access to social media.
He said, “The onus will be on social media platforms to demonstrate they are taking reasonable steps to prevent access. The onus won’t be on parents or young people.”
