All You Need To Know About Samoa Agreement As FG Pushes For It’s Implementation

One thing that many Nigerians know about the newly signed Samoa Agreement which was entered by the European Union and it’s member states is that countries that adopt it would in turn systematically legalise Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and queer rights.

This notion that has spread like wildfire among Nigerians is the primary reason why many are kicking against it’s implementation in the country, despite the Federal government’s refuttal of such claim.

Recall that the Samoa Agreement came into being on November 15, 2023, when the European Union and member states came together to sign one new partnership agreement. Also, member states that signed the agreement are called the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS).

Despite the fact that the agreement was formed in 2023, Nigeria joined the OACPS on June 28, 2024 with Ambassador Obinna Chiedu Onowu as the representative who sign the agreement on behalf of the country at the OACPS Secretariat in Brussels.

Below Are What You Should Know About The Agreement:

According to the European Union, the agreement is primarily saddled with six main priorities which borders  on human rights, democracy and governance; peace and security; human and social development; inclusive, sustainable economic growth and development; environmental sustainability and climate change; and mobility/migration in the member countries over the next two decades.

Also, the agreement is named, ‘Samoa Agreement’ because its signing took place on the Island of Samoa in Oceania during the 46th session of the ACP-EU Council of Ministers.

Furthermore, no LGBTQ clause in the agreement as member nations are free to make decisions and undertake actions at the most appropriate domestic, regional or multi-country level.

Also, the agreement would help in building a veritable instrument for Nigeria’s development cooperation with the EU beyond mere aid.
