The Abia State Government has announced its readiness to implement the new N70,000 minimum wage for its workers, starting in October 2024.

This development was disclosed on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, during a press briefing following the State Executive Council meeting.

Kanu emphasized that the decision underscores the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of workers in the state.

“The state government is committed to the minimum wage, and within the next few days, payment of the new minimum wage will commence,” Kanu stated.

He further explained that while the national minimum wage is the benchmark, the state is prepared to adjust as deemed necessary.

“If the governor wants to deviate from the national standard and pay higher, so be it,” Kanu added.

Also speaking on the matter, the Commissioner for Labour and Productivity, Sunny Onwuma, confirmed that the state is fully prepared to commence the implementation of the N70,000 minimum wage for civil servants.
