A fisherman known as Malam Usman Mai Gadi has been reported dead after being attacked by a hippopotamus on Sunday in a River in the Yauri local government district of Kebbi state.
The deceased, was fishing on the riverbank when he was assaulted and killed by the wild creature.
Locals who watched the incident stated that the hippo had a new-born baby and may have perceived the fisherman as a threat that wanted to harm her infant, prompting her to act in defense.
Prior to the unfortunate incident the deceased worked as a watchman for the emir of Yauri Orchard Farms in Yauri and also fished in the river to make up his income.
Reacting to the news, Governor Nasir Idris in a statement issued by the chief press secretary to the governor, Alhaji Ahmed Idris, grieved the death and expressed his condolences to the family of Late Malam Usman, Emir of Yauri, and the people of Yauri following the unfortunate tragedy.
The deceased has been buried in accordance with Islamic traditions.
