Peru’s former president, Alberto Fujimori, has died at the age of 86 in Lima.
Fujimori, who ruled Peru from 1990 to 2000, was released from prison on humanitarian grounds in December, two-thirds of the way through a 25-year sentence for crimes against humanity during his rule.
He was a key part of Peru’s war on terrorism, which left over 69,000 people dead and 21,000 missing from 1980 to 2000, where most of them civilians.
The government has declared a three-day national mourning for Fujimori beginning on Thursday, as he would be receiving a funeral honors that correspond to a president in office.
The children of the late ex-president, Keiko, Hiro, Sachie, and Kenji Fujimori, all wrote on social media platform X that their father had just departed to meet the Lord and they would be waiting for those who would want to say their goodbyes to him in person.
His wake would begin on Thursday at the National Museum and his burial would take place on Saturday.
Fujimori’s health deteriorated rapidly after completing treatment for tongue cancer in August and he was last seen in public on Thursday as he was leaving a Lima clinic, where he had undergone a CT scan.
