Tragedy struck on Lagos Island on Friday morning as a 7-storey building on Sanni Adewale Street in Lagos Island Local Government Area, Lagos State was engulfed in fire, Edum News reports.
The building which houses several shops reportedly caught fire in the early hours of the morning and was said to have started around 5:17 a.m., causing panic in the area.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service is however, at the scene and is actively working to extinguish the blaze, which has already destroyed items valued at millions of naira.
The Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, disclosed that firefighters from the Ebute Elefun, Sari, and Lekki 1 stations were dispatched immediately after receiving a distress call and arrived at the scene by 5:33 a.m.
She assured the people that the situation is currently under control and no further damage will be made.
She also stated that ventilation process has begun in the area to ensure safety in all of the area.
Fortunately, as at the time of the report, there have been no casualties.
She said, “Thanks to the swift actions of the Lagos State Firefighters, the situation is now under control.
“Ventilation efforts are currently underway to ensure the safety of all in the area.
“Preliminary investigations suggest the fire was triggered by an electrical surge. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported”.
